Transforming Oral Health in Kambirwa, Kenya

For years, our work in Kambirwa, Murang’a County, has offered a front-row seat into one of the most overlooked health needs in rural Kenya: oral health. The reality is simple but painful—many of our children and families live with toothaches, infections, and preventable dental disease because care is simply out of reach.

This December, through EquiHealth Global, we are stepping in to help change that story. Over the past 10 years, we have held several medical screening events in this community. Here is what we have learned:

The Hidden Burden of Dental Disease in Murang’a County

Despite its importance, dental care is one of the least accessible health services in rural Kenya. Most communities like Kambirwa, Kenya, continue to bear a heavy burden of dental caries and oral diseases.

National Snapshot

  • Kenya has only 1 dentist for every 42,000–50,000 people, most concentrated in cities. For comparison World Health Organization recommends 1 dentist for every 7000 people.
  • In a recent study, over 70% of Kenya’s counties had 10 or fewer dental professionals. (Okumu BA et al. (2022). Geospatial Analysis of Dental Access and Workforce Distribution in Kenya. Annals of Global Health)
  • Rural counties like Murang’a carry the heaviest burden of unmet need. Some counties had ratios of 1:290,000 or worse.
  • The national policy for Kenya reports adult dental caries prevalence of 34.3% (adults) in the baseline survey

Murang’a County Data

Recent studies reveal striking gaps among children aged 6–18 months in the region:

  • Only 14.3% of parents clean their children’s teeth
  • Just 2% use a toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Less than 1% have ever taken their children for a dental visit
  • 32.8% of children consume a high-risk cariogenic diet (foods rich in sugars, carbohydrates etc that promote tooth decay)

These numbers highlight a reality we see every day—families are doing their best, but access to information and services is limited.

The Reality

“In many homes in Kambirwa, a toothache doesn’t lead to a clinic visit. It becomes a daily companion—until the pain becomes unbearable.”

Why We’re Hosting a Dental Medical Fair

On December 12th, EquiHealth Global will host a full-day Dental Medical Fair at the Dylan Jones Academy. The event will feature during the annual Santa at the DJA Christmas celebration. Our goal is not only to treat pain but to restore dignity, prevent future disease, and build healthier habits.

Services We Will Provide

  • Dental cleanings
  • Extractions for severe decay
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Oral hygiene education
  • Dental hygiene kits
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Food package distribution

For many families, this will be their first-ever dental care experience.

High Impact. Low Cost. Deep Value.

This year, we expect to serve at least 500 children and their families (DJA Community)

Cost per person = USD 8

Just $8 provides a child or adult with:

  • A complete dental assessment
  • Cleaning or extraction
  • Fluoride protection
  • A dental hygiene kit
  • Education for long-term prevention
  • Nutrition bag

Why This Matters

Global dental outreach programs average around $27 per child.

By working through a community-based model, we are delivering essential care at one-third of the global benchmark—without compromising quality.

Beyond Teeth: The Bigger Picture of Health and Opportunity

Dental disease affects far more than the mouth. Pain and infections disrupt eating, sleep, school performance, self-esteem, and economic productivity. A decayed tooth can worsen nutritional intake. A mother in pain may struggle to work. A child with a chronic toothache may perform poorly in class. When we improve oral health, we improve education, opportunity, and long-term health outcomes.

This is global health at the community level—practical, preventative, life-changing.

As we prepare for this December’s fair, we’re inviting partners, friends, and supporters to join us.

Ways to Support

  • $8 = support for one person
  • $40 = a family of five
  • $80 = ten children served
  • $400 = one full treatment station supplied
  • $1000 = transforms an entire section of the community

Every dollar goes directly toward services, supplies, and lifesaving care.
